About Business Connect

Business Connect is an impact-driven organization dedicated to transforming how the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector visualizes and reports its work. Our new “All-in-One” GIS platform empowers non-profits to turn scattered field data into compelling, donor-ready stories. We are currently in an exciting Beta phase, working with “Lighthouse Partners” to shape a platform that proves the long-term sustainability of water projects around the world.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated GIS Intern to work directly with our Tech Lead in building and refining the core geospatial tools that our partners rely on. In this role, you will move beyond basic map-making to architect end-to-end data workflows. You will help build the technical infrastructure that allows field workers to collect data offline and donors to see impact in real-time.

This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical GIS skills in a real-world business environment, directly contributing to a product that helps millions gain access to clean water and sanitation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Smart Form Design: Design, publish, and test complex data collection forms using ArcGIS Survey123 (Connect & Web Designer) and ArcGIS Field Maps. You will implement logic (calculations, constraints, relevancy) to ensure high-quality data capture from remote field locations.
  • Vendor Collaboration: Work alongside our Tech Lead and our external GIS solutions provider, Blue Raster, to communicate technical needs and ensure that platform developments meet specific user and project requirements.
  • Dashboard Configuration: Build interactive ArcGIS Dashboards that visualize Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for our partners. You will configure elements to track project status, beneficiary counts, and regional impact in real-time.
  • Automation & Scripting: Work with the Tech Lead to develop scripts (using Python/ArcPy or Arcade) that automate repetitive tasks, such as report generation, data cleaning, or triggering email notifications upon survey submission.
  • User Needs Implementation: Translate non-technical user requirements into functional GIS workflows. (e.g., “We need to know when a well is broken” $\rightarrow$ Create a status field in Field Maps that triggers a dashboard alert).
  • Documentation: Create clear technical documentation and “How-To” guides to assist our Lighthouse Partners in using the platform.

Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Technical Proficiency:
  • Strong familiarity with ArcGIS Online (AGOL) ecosystem.
  • Experience configuring Survey123 (XLSForm knowledge is a huge plus).
  • Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps for mobile data collection.
  • Scripting Skills: Basic to intermediate knowledge of Python (for data management) or Arcade (for configuring pop-ups and dashboard expressions).
  • Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot common GIS errors (e.g., sync failures, geometry errors) and find creative solutions.
  • Mission Alignment: A genuine interest in using technology for social impact and international development.

Preferred Skills (Bonus)

  • Experience with ArcGIS Experience Builder or Web AppBuilder.
  • Knowledge of SQL or database management.
  • Previous experience working with non-profits or NGO data.

What You Will Learn

  • How to manage a cloud-based GIS architecture in a commercial setting.
  • Experience communicating with external development partners and vendors.
  • Advanced techniques in XLSForm design and Arcade expressions.
  • How to build “donor-ready” impact visualizations that drive funding.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment with a senior technical mentor.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter (or portfolio link) highlighting a specific map, survey, or script you have built.
